BUYING OR BUILDING IN COSTA RICA |
Being knowledgeable about and adhering to existing protocol and legal requirements is the key to successful Costa Rica property purchases and building projects. Following are a few points to help you get started on the right path.
Before purchasing a Costa Rican property, evaluate the following:
- Water source
- Electrical availability
- Telephone access
- Easement issues
- Structural integrity
- Drainage
Many of these evaluations can be conducted onsite and/or with the Public Registry, Ministry of Public Works, Ministry of Health, National Institute of Housing and Urban Development, and/or the local Municipality office.
Before building on a property in Costa Rica, secure a licensed architect or engineer to:
- Develop engineered and approved plans
- Compile a complete materials list
- Submit an application for a Construction Permit with the local Municipality. (The application must be accompanied by the approved plans and materials list.)
